(7 days / 6 nights from San Pedro Sula to Utila)
Day 1: San Pedro Sula – Tela
In the morning you are picked up at the reception of your hotel and transferred to Tela. En route we visit the Lancetilla Botanical Garden, which was founded as an experimental botanical site for tropical plants by the United Fruit Company more than 80 years ago. Here you find hardwood, medicinal and ornamental plants as well as tropical fruit trees from all over the world. You see how the bamboo forest absorbs some 90% of the daylight. Admire the long rows of majestic Royal Palms and the colorful orchid garden or try exotic fruits fresh from the tree. Over 300 bird species inhabit this beautiful natural area, among them parrots, toucans, hummingbirds and kingfishers. We then proceed to our hotel. The afternoon is left free to enjoy the Caribbean atmosphere among the shades of some coconut palms. 3 overnights in Tela.
Day 2: Punta Sal National Park
In the early morning we leave by boat to explore the impressive rock formations of Punta Sal. This national park that is officially named Jeanette Kawas is located at the western end of the bay of Tela. Law protects an area of nearly 800 km², which is one of Honduras’ most diverse areas. The park has areas of tropical rainforest that reach right to the sea, mangrove swamps, coastal wetlands, lagoons, rivers, canals, rocky and sand coast line and a reef just offshore that is part of the second largest reef in the world. We take a brief forest hike on a sheltered little bay and observe parrots, toucans and monkeys. The rest of the time we are free to relax on the beach or swim and snorkel in the crystal clear water and explore the interesting marine life of the world’s second largest coral reef. In the afternoon we return to Tela.
Day 3: Punta Izopo National Park
In the morning we leave for Punta Izopo National Park, located at the eastern end of the bay of Tela. Due to its high biodiversity this area was declared as a Wetland of International Interest in the 1990s by the Ramsar Convention. This excursion involves kayaking through the maze of mangrove creeks and rivers that make up the national park. The kayaks offer the perfect mode of transport to explore the mangroves and silently sneak up on some of the many animals that inhabit the park. The exuberant vegetation of the area is home to a large variety of wildlife, including tropical birds such as parrots and toucans, monkeys, alligators and turtles. Later we visit the beautiful beach of Triunfo de la Cruz for lunch. Enjoy the sun and the sea before we return to Tela in the afternoon.
Day 4: Tela – La Ceiba – Utila Island
At your convenience we transfer you to the ferry station in La Ceiba in the morning or afternoon. Enjoy the views of the impressive landscape, as we get closer to La Ceiba. The landscape in the surroundings of La Ceiba is characterized by sandy beaches, lagoons and mangrove forests at the coasts, banana and pineapple plantations in the lowlands. Behind them loom the densely forested mountains of the Pico Bonito National Park. From La Ceiba it takes little more than one hour in ferry to reach Utila. After a short walk to your hotel, you can relax in this charming small resort and its own little tropical garden. 3 overnights at Utila.
Day 5 & 6: Utila Island
Days left free to enjoy Utila with its funky island atmosphere and Caribbean charm. The smallest of the three main Bay Islands is already attuned to the requirements of modern tourism without being a destination for mass tourism. Many additional activities can be organized for these days at an additional cost, for instance snorkeling, diving, sea kayaking, or island exploring trips. Utila is situated amidst the second largest coral reef worldwide. It is estimated one of the world’s best diving spots and also because of its low prices a paradise for divers and snorkelers.
