For people looking for adventure, this is the perfect tour. We arrive at the Cerro Verde National Park. The Cerro Verde is a dormant volcano located at an altitude of 2.035metres above sea level and with an area of 500 hectares. The temperature oscillates between the 12º and 18º C.v At 11:00 a.m. we will begin the walk towards one of two active volcanoes to climb:
Santa Ana volcando or ILamatepec. After two hours walking we arrive at the very large and beautiful crater. We will have an impressive view of the Lake of Coatepeque, Izalco volcano, Cerro Verde volcano and the Pacific Ocean, climatic conditions allowing. This volcano had its last series of strong eruptions on the 1st of October 2005, covering the ground for several kilometers around with ash.
Izalco volcano. After two hours walking, we arrive at the crater of Izalco volcano. This volcano is one of youngest in the world and was known as “the Lighthouse of the Pacific” by the early navigators of the Pacific Ocean. At the bottom of the volcano you can see a town with the same name, Izalco. During its 200 years of almost constant activity, the volcano threatened to wipe out this town. Enjoy the impressive view of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, the Pacific coast, the city of Sonsonate and the port of Acajutla.
The diversion continues when descending by a gigantic toboggan of ash towards a dense cloud forest. What took more than one hour in ascending takes only 10 minutes to descend.
